What Will the Future Hold?

As I pour over our spreadsheets and calendars and dream about the day when we are out of debt, I begin to ponder what we will do at that point. What will the future hold for us?

We've talked about relocating to another part of the country. I suppose if we save up enough money, we'd be able to move anywhere. There's an excitement in exploring a different place and finding a new home!

My career is a good one, but to be honest, I'm not in love with it. I think that's the case with many people. Often, life just "happens" (kids, houses, cars, bills, etc) and you get kinda "stuck" doing the same old, same old.

I'm thinking of something different. I don't think it's a bad thing to re-assess your life path and try something new that may be a better fit. Something that you have a passion for! It thrills me to think that I could start something new, something different. It also scares the crap out of me!

As I've mentioned before, I love film. I'd love to work in the film industry, do something behind the scenes. I know that I'd have to take a big pay cut and start at the bottom, but I think I'd be willing to do that. I also enjoy baking. I can see myself going to culinary school and taking baking classes and see where that takes me. Just the idea, that I have the FREEDOM to explore different options is liberating. Just thinking about it puts a smile on my face :)

It's a good thing I have a year to ponder all these different options! I'll need it, so I can do all the research I need to so I feel confident in that next step... whatever it may be!

Question : Have you ever taken the leap and changed careers? If you could change your career, would you? What would you do instead?

  1. I am at a place where I am considering two paths that could combine as one. I am a project manager right now, but I am applying to be alternatively certified as a teacher (math or business) and I a pursuing a couple entreprenuership endeavors.

When I think about being a teacher, I remember a day when I had a dream of teaching math and coaching long-distance track runners.

We will see where I end up.

    Have fun on this journey!

  2. Whatever you choose, walk a path that makes you happy, it may be scary but it is worth it. PF helps give you to the freedom to try these crazy things. Once you stay out of debt, or have it very well managed you can follow your dreams without a care in the world. Like you I like my job but I don't love it. I'm going to use it till I find my passion then jump ship as soon as I see where I want to be.

  3. I am at that point right now! We have paid off our debts and are currently traveling (our goal for when we became debt free) but now we are asking what next? I've found that I like traveling when it is a vacation and not so much as a lifestyle so we are looking at four areas of the country where we would want to buy another house (prices are so cheap now to do this!!!) and since I have basically cut all ties with my previous career, I am also pondering what I want to do when I grow up. I look forward to seeing how you work these questions our for you and your family!

  4. I've debated this off and on for years. I'm not happy in my job and haven't been for the 20 yrs I've been there yet it pays the bills and hobbies and I have vacation and some senority and well basically don't know what I'd do if I could do anything else. My dad has even offered to pay for me to go back to college but I don't want a master's in my bachelor's field(I work loosely related to my degree - could do the same without it) I know people who know exactly w hat they'd want to do if they could but me? nope no idea whatsoever.

  5. I don't know what I would like to do, but I just do my job because it was most easy to do. Lousy reason, but at least an honest one. If I could change it, I think I would still want to be self-employed, but maybe something with less stress. Retired sounds perfect as well ;-)
